Sketchy Bongo Q & A

Sketchy Bongo Q & A
In Music
  1. How did you get started in the music scene?

I started playing classical piano at the age of 10 then I started listening to a lot of house and hip hop and decided to start making my own beats using programs on a really old, slow computer.

  2. Tell us more about the background of Sketchy Bongo

I’ve been producing music for about 13 years and I’ve been DJaying for about 5 years. Aewon Wolf, Kyle Deutsch and myself all went to the same school and started working together making different music since then.

  3. Is there a story behind the name?

My name represents my visual and musical art. Sketchy represents the visual because I draw and love creating quick sketches and choosing ideas. Bongo represents the musical side.

  4. What makes you, you?

My art, my family and my friends makes me who I am. Everyone is influenced by the people they keep around them.

  5. What have been some of the highlights of your career thus far?

The highlights so far have been winning an MTV Africa Music Award for Best Pop song, signing to Ultra Music in the States and doing shows there and having my music heard by so many people.

  6. What was the moment that made you realize you were famous?

I try to keep myself as hidden as I can with my mask I wear, so I think my persona and music is a lot more famous than myself. But one funny moment was when I was on a plane and the woman sitting next to me had my song as her ringtone and didn’t even know I was the person behind the mask that made that song and I was sitting right next to her.

  7. Who has been your biggest international musical inspiration?

My biggest international inspiration is Michael Jackson and Kanye West.

  8. And who has been your biggest local inspiration?

I think the SA music scene is exploding right now with great music and I can only hope that the next couple of years bring more supstars and more great music.

  9. What’s the top song on your iTunes playlist right now?

    Babes Wodumo – Wololo

  10. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever said to you…?

“Do you wear your mask in the shower?”

  11.  What would your one super power be?

I’d want to be able to fly.

  12. Where can we catch you next?

I’m gonna be playing all over the country during the next few months. So check out my social media to see where I’ll be. On NYE I’ll be playing at Victoria Falls.
