Introduction

As we continue to be inspired by Steve’s entrepreneurial
story and success, we introduce a new program, Self Made.
These South African based trail blazers join the network of
New York Self Made men who have made an incredible impact on a

Made by one’s own actions; especially, having achieved success or prominence by one’s own efforts.
”He is a self made man”

A true entrepreneur, Steve Madden, with a bold $1100 investment in 1990 has developed one of the most iconic brands in footwear. His successes are a testament to his unparalleled drive, one that has transformed a business he started with the help of his doorman, into a multi-billion dollar company. Authentic, innovative and truly inspirational, Steve is the definition of Self Made.

“ASK FOR HELP. GET PEOPLE TO
HELP YOU WITH YOUR DREAM,
BECAUSE AT SOME POINT YOU
CAN’T DO IT ALL.”

“TO BE REALLY SUCCESSFUL YOU
NEED FOCUS AND DRIVE AND
SINGULARNESS OF PURPOSE.”

These guys are the embodiment of Self Made. They’ve built their brands from the ground up, through perseverance and fearlessness. We’re celebrating their stories and in doing so, the entrepreneur itself. May their drive inspire you to aim high and far surpass your expectations.

ASH HEEGER-27

CHEF & RESTAURANT OWNER

@grand_master_ash

How do you define Self Made?
Someone who comes from any origin whether it be rich or poor, and against all odds, breaks out of their inherited social position to acquire their own success. Someone who creates their own identity through hard work and persistence. That’s Self Made.

Where do you feel most inspired?
Either in the kitchen, doing what I love. Or, travelling anywhere in the world. Seeing others create and evolve inspires me immensely

Favourite city spots in South Africa?
I’m a creature of habit so I go to the same spots over and over. Did I mention that I like breakfast? My favourite spots for brekkie (and afternoon drinks if I happen to take the day off) spots are: Mulberry & Prince, The House of Machines, Clarke’s and Loading Bay. They’re all a stone’s throw away from the restaurant.

To what do you attribute your success?
Straight up hard work.

What tips would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs?
Dream big but be prepared to start small if you have to. Never let anyone tell you that you cannot succeed, and more importantly never let anyone take advantage of you or your talent. A lot of people will want to see you to make it, more will want to see you fail. Use this and everything in your power to motivate you. Never give up.

“Dream big but be prepared to start small if you have to.”

“I aim to use my creativity to preserve the African aesthetic.”

KARABO POPPY-26

STREET ARTIST, DESIGNER & ILLUSTRATOR

@karabo_poppy

Where do you feel most inspired?
I feel most inspired when I am roaming the streets of different South African CBD’s. The uniquely South African people, the fashion, the energy and the sounds of the city are incredibly inspirational.

What has been the highlight of your entrepreneurial career?
This has to be a tie between being invited by Google to create a Google Doodle for International Women’s Day 2018 as well as being invited by the University of California to paint a 12mX40m mural in the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in 2017.

Mantra to live by?
I aim to use my creativity to preserve the African aesthetic

To what do you attribute your success?
It’s very difficult to pin point the reason for my success but my dad always says that he attributes my success to 4 things; doing the unconventional, persevering in that , originality unique style as well as having my mom teach me how to draw from a very young age.

LUIGI VIGLIOTTI-30

BARISTA & FOUNDER OF SHIFT ESPRESSO

@wonderingbarista

To what do you attribute your success?
My ability to adapt to any situation that is thrown at me. Business isn’t a solid structure and should be treated like a liquid and because of this, it should be realised that it is ever changing. To survive is to be like water and always keep moving

Where do you feel most inspired?
Experiencing amazing work created by others. Very often I find myself observing people creating meaningful and powerful work in their respective fields. Observing that process and understanding the fact that they created it from a thought in their minds, leaves a lasting impression on my mind.

What does your city mean to you?
Opportunity, as simple as that.

What tips would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs and/or artists?
I think the best advice to offer up-and-coming individuals, is to stop worrying about what people think of you. Society wants to drive you into a state of dogmatic existence, forcing you to conform. The great individuals of our age, rebelled against society’s dogma and drove their own existence into reality. That is the greatest gift you can give yourself and the world.

How do you define Self Made?
Self Made to me means having the spirit of hustler and using that spirit to fuel your success. Trusting yourself can be a lot harder than people make it seem but that is exactly what being Self Made is about.

What has been the highlight of your entrepreneurial career?
Starting my record label NomuziMabena Music was a real highlight. Taking ownership of my music career at such an early stage was a big step but it was well worth it.

Mantra to live by?
Where there is life there is hope.

What’s a normal day for NomuziMabena like?
I love my job and my life because no day is the same. Lots of studio and writing right now though as I get ready to drop my album.

What does your city mean to you?
Johannesburg is the city of gold. It’s not the city that raised me but it is the city that pays me.

“Trusting yourself can be a lot harder than people make it seem but that is exactly what being Self Made is about.”

THYS UYS-37

BARISTA & FOUNDER OF SHIFT ESPRESSO

@thys_uys

What has been the highlight of your entrepreneurial careers?
Other than partnering with my best friend – Probably being able to open an international tattoo studio in Colorado. We are extremely proud of FH Red and FH Black alike – each time we open a new store, we aim higher and continuously try to create an even better experience, putting all the knowledge gained back into all the stores

What has been the biggest challenge?
Sho. There have been many. As a small business owner, you do not have the rest assured salary every month-end, as your nest egg, your retirement and your children’s education all rely on the success of your business. The stress that this brings is a daily challenge – and all I can do is trust that our business model and practice will see us through to our old age!
From a business point of view – I will be honest and say that Artists are a challenging bunch of humans to deal with! Balancing a business mind with a creative one is quite the task – but it has been through respecting each other that I think we have accomplished more together as a team than we would have otherwise.
Juggling work and personal life is also a daily challenge.

Mantra to live by?
Everything and anything is cool – the key is moderation

What’s a normal day for Thys & Jen like?
Thys is the early bird and Jen is most definitely not a morning person. Thys gets his son ready for school, drops him off and heads to work. Preps for his client over a cup of coffee and then straight to the needle. Jen gets going and pretty much spends most the day in meetings or on her laptop. With the addition of a second son, routine is a sought after commodity but they pretty much take it as it comes, and tag team all the way!

Favourite city spots in South Africa?
Brian Lara Rum Eatery, Roxanne’s Rum Eatery, Rockets Bryanston and Urbanologie

What does your city mean to you?
My city is alive and fast paced, a place where everyone is able to express themselves and I love being a part of that creative space.

To what do you attribute your success?
Great team work, hard work and striving for excellence.

“My city is alive and fast paced, a place where everyone is able to express themselves.”

GRAFFITTI ARTIST AND ILLUSTRATOR

@thatdamnvandal

Shaun, who goes by the alias Damn Vandal, is a renowned graffiti artist who to date has painted over 1 000 murals and several designs on high-end cars. His work with a number of local and international brands has propelled his creativity from a hobby to a successful business. Key highlights so far include painting a Lamborghini at the Top Gear show and a 6 story mural in Jo’burg CBD.

What’s a normal day for Shaun Oakley like? I Make sure my daughter is ready for school, play music as loud as possible to work. Juggle 3 jobs at once during the day, get home, have wine then Netflix and chill!

What has been the biggest challenge in your career? The balance of work and family time. I work a full-time job and run my private graffiti business which becomes very difficult to fit everything in without letting people down.

ANDREW CHAPLIN-27

MUSICIAN & CONTRA-BANNED
CO-FOUNDER

@locnville

Andrew and twin brother, Brian, are no strangers to the local music scene as the duo from Locnville. In his most recent body of work as Co-Founder of the multi-disciplinary publishing, recording and production label, Contra-Banned, Andrew attributes his success to perseverance and an insatiable appetite for continuous learning.

Favourite city spots in South Africa? I’m a big fan of Sea Point in Cape Town, it’s just got a vibe that I like. I’m also loving what’s happening in Maboneng in Johannesburg CBD. It’s really exciting to me at the moment, I see a lot of growth and a bright future for it.

What tips would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs? Take your craft seriously and learn everything you can about it. Be willing to take criticism from others but always know what your own goal is. Be proactive, be confident and live like you have something to prove.

BRIAN CHAPLIN-27

MUSICIAN & CONTRA-BANNED
CO-FOUNDER

@locnville

As Co-Founder of the Contra-Banned label and member of Locnville with twin brother, Andrew, Brian continuously has his eyes set on the next big window of opportunity. As a serial entrepreneur, he dedicates his source of inspiration to moments of pause in the city where he can gather his thoughts and plan the next move.

How do you define Self Made? For me, you can say you’re self made when you’ve taken an idea or dream and turned it into a successful reality.

What tips would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs? I would say persistence. Obviously, you need a good product, a good business model and all of those things, but you have to be unashamedly persistent in getting everything off the ground. Also, have fun. As much as we are all here to make money, it’s really important to enjoy what you’re doing in order to get there, otherwise there really is no point.

“SEEING SOMETHING GO FROM AN IDEA TO
REALITY, THAT’S THE REAL HIGHLIGHT.”

This season our men’s collection covers the
Steve Madden man from day to night and
every occasion in between.
Do it all with authenticity
and individuality. Be Self Made.
